A Path to Fire
At 8 in the morning They opened her cell Thousands had come To see her put to death They dragged her out Dressed her in white clothes A hat adorned with flames A black cross preceded her The Court of the Inquisition Were waiting in a convent Placed on display before the crowd They forced her into a cage From morning to afternoon They read all her “crimes” Rebеllious to the end She hurlеd insults and “blasphemies” The inevitable sentence Was finally passed down Maria would be burned alive In front of the whole town In her final moments Maria broke down She asked for a confessor To repent of her sins So on a street corner For three hours time She told them what they needed To keep from burning her alive They strangled her to death To save her the pain of fire Then hung her on a stake The flames filled the sky

A child of Seville Born into a house of piety A priest and a nun They walked the path before But she was unlike them Though she’ll tread a parallel road Unorthodox and wild She’ll walk a path to fire She will not be tamed Though many will attempt to Hypocrisy reigns This world cannot hold her Maria!!!! You were meant for greatness! Your strength and resolve Will not be forgotten! No, she’s not like them Though she’ll tread a parallel road Unorthodox and wild She’ll walk a path to fire A path to fire! They will know your name! You suffered for so long Your chronicle buried But now, the world shall hear!!

A childhood cut short By the loss of parents In care of her siblings Nothing will come easy A formidable challenge Still waits around the bend Adding insult to injury The child made blind She remained undeterred Becoming literate Trying to forge a path Left the home of her father At just the age of twelve She finds herself In the bed of her confessor A man of the cloth, abusing his power Relegated to a concubine By a fucking monster Wielding his “holy” power Over a girl alone in the world It is said She’d bed the priest “To take the cold out of her” To feel so alone To have no real choice Preyed upon to fill that void A man of power Seemingly pious Chose to be a desecrator

And after the death of Her rapist confessor She entered into a convent And taking on a habit Attempted to join them But that was not to be Maria spoke of visions They could not comprehend She claimed to talk to angels And even to their messiah The sisters were appalled For her, they held no quarter They would not entertain Her calling tossed aside Rejected from the cloth And all she’d ever known Stuck somewhere in between The expected and the unknown The road that lies ahead Is full of twists and turns But she will find her way And will not be deterred

Arriving in Lucena She falls in with another confessor She takes to his bed In religious ecstasy Manipulated yet again Her passion weaponized But this is short lived For she’ll be alone again Alone Again Alone Again!!! Her confessor imprisoned In a far off monastery She does what she can To make ends meet Because she is fearless And sees god in unorthodox ways They continue to abuse her But she’s convinced it’s penance

Now back in Seville Taken in by another confessor The most sinister of all He would be her complete undoing “Blessed Dolores” they called her Her visions and “powers” made known Shown off like some trophy Her passion exploited He frequently beat her Excusing it as penance For twelve long years She’s bound to this man The pain she endures She’s convinced she deserves Bruised and continually broken A victim of her station How did we award Such overwhelming power To one gender over another Based on stories and lies The untold abuses The shame of it all The protection awarded To the most depraved among us The priest denounces her Claims she’s in league with the devil Arrested for heresy An innocent woman scorned

Interrogated and imprisoned For two years time To coerce a confession And to assess her crimes Maria unwavering Her beliefs tightly held Her strength never faltered Only giving of herself She claimed to work with Mary Purging souls from purgatory And married to Jesus An extreme blasphemy They would not convince her So they put her on trial A victim of her abusers Now saving their own hides Whatever they accused She’d reply, “It is true” But never acknowledged Her guilt in anything “Though you will burn me alive I will not deny my testimony Do whatever you deem best For I have one soul, one life!” The court found her guilty Convicted her of heresy They gave her two days To repent for a lesser sentence Locked in a cell She would not allow A confessor to visit And she repented nothing!
