And still the rain kept falling<br/> As I gazed into the night<br/> Bleak and dismal visions<br/> Slowly flashed before my eyes<br/> <br/> I follow in the footprints of the men who went before<br/> The voices cry behind, but I can’t hear them anymore<br/> <br/> Onwards to the harbour<br/> Where the ships put out to sea<br/> Leaving all that was behind<br/> And all that might have been<br/> <br/> The world now cloaked in darkness, I embark upon the waves<br/> Raise the sails, set a course and take it to the grave<br/> <br/> Unlamented, my dreams slowly depart<br/> Now forgotten memories, inside a blackened heart<br/> My eyes stare wide in wonder, with lessons truly learned<br/> That ship has sailed, that bridge has burnt<br/> <br/> This is goodbye, this is farewell<br/> Bring forth the flames, in solitude dwell<br/> <br/> Now I know what lies beyond, as I pass between the gates<br/> Landscapes clad in frozen swaths of sadness, fear and hate<br/> Choirs of grief sound out my name in mournful harmony<br/> Forests bare and naked fields greet me infernally<br/> <br/> Caressed by ice, arcane and cold, it permeates in me<br/> The sweetest touch of emptiness, I cry in ecstasy<br/> Clear I see the meaning of the truths life held in store<br/> Sailing ships and burning bridges, mourn me evermore
